Introduction: Unveiling the Hidden Gem of Donner Pass Summit Tunnel Hike

Prepare to be amazed by the captivating allure of the Donner Pass Summit Tunnel Hike! This unique adventure is perfect for families and history enthusiasts alike, offering a blend of natural beauty and fascinating historical remnants. As you embark on this hike, you'll find yourself immersed in the rich history of Northern California, exploring an old, abandoned railroad that once traversed the majestic Sierra Nevada Range.

The Fascinating History Behind Donner Pass and its Abandoned Railroad

Hand built by Chinese Workers for over 15 months in August of 1867, with the first train passing through the tunnels on June 18, 1868. The last train, passed through these historic tunnels in 1993, as the route was changed to a new location.

At the start of your hike look for the sign for the ancient Petroglyphs! If you look closely, you can see them carved into the rock, they are very faint, but they are quite a site to see!

As you begin your hike up the rocks, you will be sure to marvel at the 75-foot China wall, that can be seen from the road below, that is still standing, a century after it was created to prop up the railroad track.

The 1,659-foot tunnel holds secrets from a bygone era, with its weathered walls adorned in graffiti that tells tales of countless visitors who have ventured through its eerie depths. While some may find it creepy, others are captivated by the sense of mystery that surrounds this historic landmark.

Now that we know a little more history behind the tunnels, let's get there!!!

Finding the Old Abandoned Railroad with Kids

Finding the tunnels or an easy family-friendly way to access the tunnels can be a bit confusing. As there are a few different ways to access the tunnels.

The best advice I can give is to follow the directions to the historic Donner Summit tunnels, go over the bridge, and about 100 yards after, there will be a pretty obvious dirt turn out with a porter potty.

You should see the plaque for the China wall, this is how you know you are in the right spot.

Park your car, pass the plaque, and the porter potty, heading right. You will have to walk a short distance on the side of the road, until you get to the huge, flat rocks. (Photo below for reference)

Keep going until you see the plaque for the petroglyphs, once you are here, you are ready to embark on your journey to the tunnels.

The Thrill of Discovery: Unearthing Surprises Along the Abandoned Railroad Trail

You finally made it to the top! Not a bad hike at all!!! Once you finally get to the top of the mountain, looking down is beyond breathtaking!!! You literally feel like you are on top of the world. Then the real journey begins!

As you traverse through the tunnel, be prepared for unexpected encounters with nature's inhabitants. Bats flitting overhead add an element of intrigue to your journey, while echoes of past explorers seem to whisper tales from long ago. Rats squeaking and scurrying in the dark! It's a true testament to the resilience and ingenuity of those who built this remarkable feat of engineering.

Some people disapprove of the graffiti, as it can take away from the natural beauty of the tunnels, however, I personally thought it added a nice touch and makes for some pretty cool photos!

Conclusion: Donner Pass Summit Tunnel Hike - A Remarkable Blend of History, Nature, and Adventure:

While exploring this old railroad may not be for the faint-hearted, it offers a truly unforgettable experience.
