National Video game day - July 8

Updated: Jul 15, 2023

There have always been so many statistics and talk

about why we shouldn’t let our kids play video games. However, research has shown that video games have many important benefits for your child, in comparison to negative impacts.

In honor of national video game day, I wanted to do a quick segment on why I let my kids play video games.

Questions to ask to stay engaged with your child:

 Why do you like playing video games?

 What about this game do you enjoy most?

 How does this game make you feel?

Why I let my kids play video games;

  •  As parents we are in control of monitoring who they are playing with and speaking to

  •  Teaches them and promotes internet safety, stranger danger (always remind them not to send any personal info, and not to obtain anyone's personal information online)

  •  Encourages taking turns, being polite and respectful.

  • Encourages leadership

  • Promotes teamwork

  •  I have the passwords and full access to gaming accounts to review all activity

  •  They promote and enhance problem solving skills

  •  Enhances cognitive skills

  •  Helps with their creativity and imagination

  •  Enhance social skills – let them add and talk to their friends!

  •  Promotes relaxation – helps your kid wind down and relax (unless they are raging, of course)

  •  Gives them a reward to look forward to, after completing a chore, etc.

  •  Helps build emotional resilience, I mean how many times can you lose before you start

  • to accept it and better yourself? Practice makes perfect!

  •  meet new, age appropriate friends to play with

  •  improves concentration

  •  Video game creators! Makers! Youtubers! Twitch! They can make money when they get

  • older, if they choose this as a career path

  •  Coding jobs, computer jobs, game creator jobs

  •  Bonding time with siblings or even yourself if you play a round with them

  •  Healthy brain stimulation

  •  Enhances multitasking skills

  • and lets keep it all the way real, because we need a damn break from time to time!!

Always remember to Look for concerning behaviors or language that they may pick up – tired, violent, irritable, not sleeping, etc. to let you know if you should change up the games they are playing.

I do agree that we should still limit screen time and encourage other activities, however, I don’t mind the days when my kids want to sit inside and play video games! I think there is nothing wrong with it, especially these days, since everything revolves around technology.

Please feel free to share some of your gaming tips and ways you keep your child safe!
